The Port Fairy Surf Life Saving Club Nippers season kicked off last Sunday with a strong attendance at the registration morning and first session. Despite less than ideal conditions a great contingent of Nippers were on hand ready to have fun and learn some new skills, including many first timers. A number of beach activities were held to keep the younger Nippers warm before hitting the surf for some wading and board paddling.
The Surf Boats are an important part of the club and this weekend the boat crews will be off to Torquay to take part in the first carnival for the season. Both the open mens and open womens crews will be competing, and Howard Sharp reports that both crews are training well and are further advanced than usual at this time of year. The mens crew have been training 3 nights a week for the past 8 weeks and the womens crew have held morning training sessions at least twice a week over that period. After a couple of months of work on their technique and match fitness the crews are raring to go for this weekend. The mens crew comprises Howard, Dean Dwyer, Sean Murrihy, Scott Hetherington and sweep Paul Buchanan with the womens crew made up of Leonie Boyd, Nicole Dwyer, Tania Dalton, Brooke Greene and sweep Greg Dalton. Greg and Peter Hill, amongst others, have also been in training on the surf boats. The carnivals are usually a great spectacle and anyone looking to support the crews by attending will enjoy a great day out.
Nippers is on again this Sunday from 10:30-12:00, meeting at the clubrooms on East Beach. If you were unable to attend last weekend that’s no problem as all kids are welcome and registration can be completed at any time. PFSLSC will be taking part in a local Nippers carnival, together with Warrnambool, Portland and Port Campbell surf clubs, to be held at Warrnambool on Saturday the 17th of December. Any interested Nippers or parents should talk to the Nipper co-ordinators or age managers this weekend or contact the club as below.
